Diagnosis – WordPress Plugin

Hot Plugin, Cool FeaturesDiagnosis adds a subpage to the WordPress Dashboard where the main administrator can view technical data about the server setup along with a suitable explanation. Most fields also have a link to an appropriate Wikipedia article.

It’s a simple tool, but can be indispensable in trying to sort out a problem on your site. It provides detailed information about the versions of software in use on your websites server. This includes things like:

  • your webserver’s IP address and port number
  • the name of your WordPress database
  • server software versions (Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc.)
  • and more.

This is all pretty esoteric stuff, but if you need to supply the information to Tech Support, it comes in real handy.

Amazon Showcase – WordPress Plugin

Hot Plugin, Cool FeaturesAmazon Showcase is a WordPress Plugin for showcasing items from Amazon. Simply enter the ASIN/ISBN numbers of any products and optionally enter an Associate ID for earning commissions. The product image will be displayed with a link to the product detail page on Amazon.com. Showcases can be used as widgets, placed in posts/pages, or inserted directly into your template.

Our favorite feature of the Amazon Showcase plugin is that it lets you place nice graphic links to Amazon books and products as a randomized item in your sidebar. The plugin will show a book link at random on every page of your site, from a pre-specified list, or lists, of books that you want to recommend. You can see this in action in the right-hand sidebar of this site. If you navigate around the site a little, you’ll see how the books in the sidebar change from page to page at random.

What configuration options are available?: Here is some detailed information from the developers website. There are several attributes available in each showcase: Showcase Name, Associate ID, Locale and Item ASIN/ISBNs & Image Sizes.

  • Name Use: this attribute for naming a particular showcase. The text entered here will be used to reference the showcase.
  • Associate ID: This is is an optional field that allows Amazon Associates to enter their Associate ID. When you supply an Associate ID, it is automatically inserted appropriately into the item’s link. This allows you to earn commissions when people click on the item and purchase it through Amazon.
  • Locale: The locale field allows you to select which of the international Amazon websites you would like to pull items from. You have 6 options: * United States (.com) * United Kingdom (.co.uk) * Germany (.de) * Japan (.co.jp) * France (.fr) * Canada (.ca)
  • ASIN/ISBN: Use this field to define the Amazon product you would like to display in the showcase. This can be any item from the Amazon catalog of the locale you selected. Simply locate the item’s ASIN or ISBN and enter it in one of these fields.?Examples: ASIN: B000I1ZWRC ISBN: 1582345236
  • Image Size: Amazon usually provides five different product image sizes: swatch, small, tiny, medium and large. Select the image size that you would like to use within your showcase.
  • Can I create multiple Amazon Showcases on my site?: Yes, you can create as many showcases as you like and each showcase can contain an arbirary number of Amazon items.

Amazon Reloaded for WordPress is a similar plugin which provides a super easy way to add Amazon product links directly from the editing window of any page or post.

Earn Income with Your Recomendations

Including an affiliate ID in the plugin settings will link your Amazon Affiliate account to any potential sales that are generated by someone who: visits your site, sees a book you recommend, and clicks on the link. The link takes them to that product page on the Amazon site, and—if they then follow through and actually purchase the book (or product)—then your affiliate account is credited a small commission from the sale. It won’t make you rich, but if your site users like your recommendations and act on them, it a small amount of passive income that you wouldn’t see otherwise.

The plugins both require an Amazon Web Services account in order to work. If you want to use these plugins on your site, we can set up an Amazon Web Services account and an Amazon Associates account for you, and link them to the plugin in the appropriate place.

At some point, after you start using the Amazon plugins, you’ll want to login to your Amazon account and set up your payment options so they can send you any affiliate earnings you generate. To do this, just log in, and click on the Account Settings link at the top right on the page. There’s a link under Payment Information for “Change your payment method.” Just follow the instructions and make your choices there and you’ll be all set!

The one thing to keep in mind is that you can’t use your own affiliate link to purchase product. You can offer it up to others, but you, yourself can’t purchase using it. Doing so could give cause  for Amazon to discontinue your affiliate account.

All in One SEO Pack – WordPress Plugin

Hot Plugin, Cool FeaturesAll in One SEO Pack provides a simple, one-stop location where you can add important “Meta” content for Search Engines to help categorize and rank your content for their search results pages. With it, you can add keywords; a brief description; and a more specific, detailed title for your pages and posts—all of which are visible only to the search engines, not the human visitors to your site. The more specific information you can provide for the search engines, the better chance they will have at matching your content with a users search terms.

While the search engines will scour all your normal content—intended for human readers—to index keywords on their own, using the All in One SEO plugin will allow you to give them something extra…intended just for the search engines.

The keywords are the words or phrases that are most likely to be used by people when they initiate a search. When you are compiling a keyword list, think first in terms of the specific words/phrases that are technically correct for your industry—for those people who are “in the know” and will likely search using those terms.

Then you want to step out of your professional shoes and try to think about how they lay-person will look for you. If they aren’t familiar with the jargon, what words/phrases might they use? You want to cast a wider net here and think creatively.

eg: If I was looking for galoshes and didn’t know the term, might I try the phrase “boots with buckles”? So then both boot and buckle are good terms to add (you want to keep terms SINGULAR, as that will satisfy both singular and plural for the search engine).

Think Like an Engine

Suppose you write an article about Search Engine Optimization… for your readers, you might write a friendly title like “Search Engine Magnetism” and soften your copy with anecdotal material for your non-technical audience, rather than a lot of techy-jargon. In the SEO section of your post, you can then write a second title that is much more specific and detailed like “Writing Keyword-Rich Copy that is Optimized for Search Engines” only seen by the search engines. Then you could add the more technical terms that would cause your poor readers to go pale in the keywords section. And finally, you could write a short, keyword-rich description to help the engines and the readers choose YOUR entry over the others on the results page.

Taking a little time and care to add this SEO content to you page will boost your chances of having your page be found by the people you intended it for. Without it, the anecdotal copy and the fun title might send you to results listed with magnetism, magnets and other things you hadn’t intended.

Here some info from the developers website of the most important on-page ranking factors, and how they are addressed by this WordPress SEO plugin.

  • Titles: The text that you see in your browser’s window bar is the most important thing *on* your page. All in One SEO lets you add detailed titles that always come before the main blog title on a page-by-page basis So it’s seen first and ranks with more specificity. Leave the post title as it is but change the meta title.
  • Descriptions: Once your pages rank in search engines your description (aside of course from your title) makes a potential visitor want to click through, or not. It’s meta descriptions, believed dead by many people, that decide over your site’s fate. If you don’t want to invest the time and write a description for every post at least let them be auto-generated. This vastly better than the usual “Share This … Posted on … under …” description that is often used.

The meta-description serves two purposes… It can be rich with some of your most important keyword terms and phrases, thereby reinforcing your results with the search engines. But more importantly, this will be the short descriptive paragraph that the search engine will display on a results page for the reader to review.

This is how your audience will be able to determine that YOURS is the site they are looking for from among the list of other similar results. Make it short and concise. While it can be any length you’d like, Google will only display the first 150 characters in the search results listing. And if the reader doesn’t find what they are looking for in that, they may not click on your link.

  • Keywords: Adding keyword lets you use specific detailed language that may not show up in the article, but is still relevant. All in One SEO Pack can also generate them from your categories (this was the old way of tagging your posts in wordpress) or from Ultimate Tag Warrior or, starting with WordPress 2.3, the built-in tagging system. Using your categories is optional, the rest is auto-detected and used if there. WP 2.3.x tags are the preferred keyword source.

Akismet – WordPress Plugin

Hot Plugin, Cool FeaturesAkismet Is a core plugin that’s included with every installation of WordPress. It provides your site with protection from what is known as “comment spam.” Comment spam is left by people and automated “spambots” to promote their products—usually something like viagra, gambling, or other vices. Left unchecked, it can quickly fill up the comments sections of your site and make it difficult for your users to find legitimate comments among all the spam. And users who find a site clogged with spam are unlikely to stay long or to return. Without Akismet or some other spam protection plugin, your job of managing the comments on your site would be a nightmare.

Akismet works by checking your comments against the Akismet web service database to see if they look like spam or not. It lets you review the spam it catches under your blog’s “Comments” admin screen. To use Akismet, you need to first sign up for a free account with WordPress.com to obtain an API key to allow it to communicate with the Akismet database. When Fresh Start Creative installs your site, we also sign you up for a free WordPress.com account in order to secure an API key for you.

When the plugin catches something as spam it saves it in the database for 15 days in case you want to check it out manually and then automatically deletes it. In the unlikely event something gets incorrectly identified as spam you can correct it and it submits the “false positive” back to Akismet for analysis and improvement of the system. If a spam comment happens to get through and you mark it as spam within WordPress, it does the same thing. Akismet becomes more effective the more you use it.
